A vascular surgeon is a medical doctor who specializes in the diagnosis, medical management, and surgical treatment of disorders affecting the blood vessels (arteries, veins, and lymphatics), excluding the heart and brain. They treat aneurysms, varicose veins, peripheral artery disease, and deep vein thrombosis. Vascular surgeons earn an MD or DO, complete a residency in general surgery and a vascular fellowship, or an integrated vascular surgery residency. They perform both open surgical reconstructions and minimally invasive endovascular procedures.
